Martin Moreno
Martin Moreno was born in Adrian, Michigan, where he was immersed in a bilingual environment, speaking Spanish at home and English at school. Growing up in a working-class family, his parents toiled in the fields and foundries, an experience that deeply shaped the themes in his art. Reflecting on his childhood, he recalls, "My earliest memories of color and rhyme are those of the fields, sitting in the back of a pickup truck watching rows upon rows of corn and tomatoes form a visual pattern of rhythm. Listening to the realities of superstition, as told by the elders, stories of the Llorona (crier), the Earth, and stories of my glorious past." These formative experiences have found expression in his work, which spans sculpture, murals, paintings, and mosaics, each piece imbued with cultural significance.
Moreno earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from Siena Heights University. He is also a founding and past board member of ALAC (Arizona Latin@ Arts and Cultural Center), which was established in Phoenix as the first Latino Cultural Center in Arizona. His role in ALAC reflects his commitment to advancing Latino culture through the arts.
In 2008, he was one of twelve Chicano/Latino artists selected for the historic “Locals Only” exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum, a groundbreaking show as the first to feature Chicano/Latino artists in the museum's history. His participation in this exhibition marked a significant milestone in the recognition of Chicano/Latino artists in mainstream cultural institutions.
In 2011, Moreno was honored with the prestigious Arizona Governor's Artist of the Year award, an accolade given to exceptional artists across all disciplines in the state. This honor celebrates his outstanding contributions to the arts and his impact on Arizona's cultural landscape.
Through his work, Martin Moreno continues to weave a tapestry of personal, cultural, and historical narratives that resonate with a wide audience, while celebrating the rich traditions and stories of his heritage.
